Sea beet? Tell me more! Is the texture like chard? Where did you get the seed?

Yes, it is very much like chard, but I find it more mild and tender. It doesn’t have as much of a pronounced midrib. I guess it is more like beet greens in that way. The seed we grow now is ours, but it originally came from Experimental Farm Network. It is the wild ancestor of chard and a very cold hardy, self-seeding biennial, which means we can harvest leaves the second year early in spring and then harvest its seeds later in summer—or just let them drop and it behaves like a perennial once established. If you like chard, you’ll probably like this better.

We grow a lot of chard, so I am very interested. I hadn't heard of EFN, and just looked at their seed store. A very intriguing collection of offerings. Sea beet is sold out, but I have put it on a list for next year. Thanks for the info!
